What’s the difference between podiatry and chiropody?

In the UK, the terms are often used interchangeably. At our clinic, we use “Chiropody” vs “Podiatry” primarily for pricing and appointment type:

  • Chiropody/Routine podiatry: routine skin and nail care (general nail care, athletes’ foot, corns, callus, verrucae, cracked heels)
  • Podiatry: more complex lower limb pain, musculoskeletal injuries and biomechanics problems needing longer assessment and treatment

If you’re not sure, call or message us, and we’ll guide you.

Podiatry for foot pain, walking and running problems

Diagnosis-first care for stubborn or recurring foot and ankle pain

Common reasons patients book a Podiatry Assessment:
  • Heel pain / plantar fasciitis (including heel pad issues and nerve entrapment patterns)
  • Forefoot pain (metatarsalgia), Morton’s neuroma-type symptoms
  • Bunions, toe drift/deformity, painful big toe joint (hallux limitus/rigidus patterns)
  • Arthritis in the foot (OA, inflammatory arthritic conditions, gout presentations)
  • Achilles pain and ankle/foot loading pain
What we do in a podiatry appointment
  • Detailed history and physical assessment
  • Clear explanation of what’s driving pain (load, footwear, mechanics, tissue sensitivity)
  • Treatment started on day one, where appropriate, plus a plan (self-care, exercises, footwear changes, insoles/orthotics if indicated)

Chiropody for nails, corns and hard skin

Comfortable, professional footcare, without the dread

Common reasons patients book a Chiropody Appointment:
  • Thickened or painful nails, fungal-looking nails, and ingrowing toenails
  • Corns and callus (hard skin), cracked heels (heel fissures)
  • Verrucae/warts and general foot comfort care
What to expect

Your appointment includes a foot health assessment (vascular and neurological checks, skin and nail review) and treatment during the visit.

Specialist foot services

When you need something more targeted

Diabetic Footcare

If you have diabetes, good foot health is essential. We offer circulation and sensation checks, advice, and treatment of corns and callus where needed.

Fungal nails / Clearanail

We assess properly first (history, nail review, and testing options). If appropriate, Clearanail can improve topical treatment penetration and is available as a structured pathway.

Ingrown toenails / Nail surgery

For recurring ingrown toenails, we can discuss definitive options (including procedures using local anaesthetic where appropriate) and aftercare follow-up.

Your first visit

We’ll ask you to complete a short health questionnaire (medical history, allergies, medication). You can also download and complete it before you arrive.

Which should I book, podiatry or chiropody?

If it’s mainly pain, walking/running issues, plantar fasciitis, bunions, arthritis or biomechanics, book Podiatry. If it’s nails/corns/hard skin/verrucae/general footcare, book Chiropody.

Do you treat plantar fasciitis and heel pain?

Yes, assessment focuses on why the heel is overloaded and what needs changing to settle it and stop it returning.

Do you offer diabetic foot checks?

Yes, circulation and sensation checks, advice and footcare where needed.

Do you do fungal nail testing and Clearanail?

Yes, assessment first, then a clear treatment pathway if appropriate.
